Grey Cast Iron, Ductile cast iron, Special cast iron

Grey or lamellar cast iron is the most widespread type of cast iron. It is obtained by melting cast iron and steel scrap. Graphitizing elements in lamellar form (carbon, silicon, phosphorus) are then added.

Among the mechanical features of lamellar cast iron we find: good resistance to compression, shear, wear and good vibration damping capacity. Furthermore, graphite, in the form of flakes, slows down the speed of corrosion penetration and therefore the possibility of perforation.
Finally, the excellent workability makes gray cast iron a material capable of providing the most varied project solutions at low costs.

Ductile cast iron is a type of cast iron in which the graphite, unlike gray cast irons, does not appear in the form of flakes but in spheroid-shaped nodules. This composition characterizes ductile cast iron for its ductility and its high mechanical features.

One of its properties is the density less than 10% compared to that of steel and therefore it’s possible to obtain a significantly lower weight as well as having vibration damping characteristics far superior to those of steel.
Ductile iron can be classified in different ways based on the matrix obtained with appropriate heat treatments.

In fact, it can be:
Ferritic: high ductility and toughness, high magnetic permeability, good machine tool workability.
Pearlitic: greater hardness, tensile and abrasion resistance, lower toughness, ductility and magnetic permeability.
Ferritic-Perlitic: the most widespread and least expensive type, with intermediate characteristics compared to the previous ones, but with good workability.
